Celebrate Freedom!

As we celebrate America's freedom this month, we remember those who have kept us free for so many years. Living in a military town like Pensacola, this is easy. We interact with our military folks on a daily basis and mentally utter a little "thank you" for them often.

But how many of us take our freedom for granted much of the time? It's not until we travel outside the United States and experience life elsewhere.....or until the events of 9/11 occurred that we were reminded. It's one thing to watch the TV news of bombed out cities in far away's quite another to realize that what you are watching is in New York City...or Pittsburgh...or Washington.

"There are those, I know, who will say that the liberation of humanity, the freedom of man and mind, is nothing but a dream. They are right. It is the American dream." ~Archibald MacLeish

Pain Management

Many people already know that massage therapy helps relieve muscle soreness. But a new consumer survey released by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) reveals that more people than ever before seek massage specifically to manage and relieve pain. The survey shows that nearly half (47 percent) of those polled have had a massage at some time specifically for pain relief and/or pain management.

This is a reflection of the growing awareness of massage's many health benefits, including pain relief. Massage therapy has also been proven to help relieve stress and to help reduce heart rate and blood pressure. Research has shown that massage also boosts the body's immune system functioning and increases the body's natural "killer cells" activity.

Many people experience freedom from pain and aches that have built over months of tension. After an initial period of feeling slowed down immediately following a massage, many people experience an increase in energy that can last for days. The effectiveness of massage lies in a simple and direct strategy: working from the external, outer mechanisms of pain to the primary, root cause. Massage therapists utilize a holistic approach, focusing on the entire body system and its relationship to soft tissue. Their care isn't focused only on the site of pain.

Another benefit of massage therapy from a client perspective is how it helps clients become more aware of their bodies and better familiarize them with the pain they experience. The massage therapist not only helps relieve muscle and other soft tissue pain, but also has an impact on the patient by virtue of human touch.

Massage gives you a feeling of comfort and relaxation like a mini vacation from the pressures of life. A clinical study at the University of Miami School of Medicine shows that massage increases mental acuity. Massage also increases beta waves in this study which shows that one is more relaxed after a series of massages. This relaxed state lasts longer as the cumulative benefits of massage are realized when you get a massage on a regular basis.
